Exploring Task-Based Approach in Learning Mandarin as a Foreign Language

Task-based language teaching (TBLT) focuses on performing meaningful tasks in a target language. This quantitative study investigates how the TBLT approach can be applied to of Mandarin Malay students through real-life interactions with native speakers. 31 participants were purposely selected from public university Malaysia perform specific such as shopping, dining and bargaining The used survey adapted Ellis (2009). has 6 sections. Section A items demographic profile, section B 7 natural use, C 8 learner-centeredness, D focus form, E communicative F rejection traditional approaches. findings show that responded positively 5 features suggested by They naturally, learner-centered, sometimes form-focused comfortable real-life, non-traditional context. improve learners' competence increase their knowledge also help teachers strategies materials. Future research could exploring more task-based activities, groups conducting experimental study.
